Cybermoor Upgrades Wireless Network with Proxim Solutions

Proxim Wireless Corp. reportedly has announced that U.K.-based Cybermoor has signed an agreement to upgrade its network with Proxim’s wireless broadband solutions.

Cybermoor offers community broadband projects. Using Proxim’s Tsunami MP.11 license-free WiMAX (News - Alert) radios, the company will distribute the wireless connection throughout Alston Moor, a civil parish in Cumbria, England.

This upgrade with Proxim equipment is expected to bring Alston Moor wireless service of up to 12 Mbps.

“The distance and terrain between Alston Moor and other towns caused more than just a physical separation – it prevented the deployment of traditional broadband, which created a significant economic separation as well,” said Daniel Heery, project manager at Cybermoor.

He said that when the company was evaluating technologies that could overcome the existing problems and deliver a higher quality and higher speed service to its members in a cost-effective manner, it became clear that Proxim’s wireless broadband systems were the optimal solution.

In 2001, the Cybermoor social enterprise began with funding from the British government to investigate how digital communications and computers might help boost rural economies.

Initially, government funding was used to provide more than 600 computers Alston Moor, enough to put a computer in nearly every home in the community at no cost to the residents.

The second step was to provide a broadband network that all of these computers could connect to. Company officials said that this original 802.11b network continues to work but currently equipment failures are becoming increasingly common with the age of the exposed equipment. Also, interference with home WiFi (News - Alert) networks is a constant problem.

Officials said that the new Proxim network uses the 5.8 GHz frequency, so interference will be reduced.

On this project, Proxin’s U.K. partner was 802 Global, which worked with Cybermoor to define the detailed network plan. 802 Global is providing comprehensive ongoing support and training to the Cybermoor team during the installation process.

Proxim is a provider of end-to-end broadband wireless systems that deliver the quadruple play of voice, video, data and mobility to all organizations today. Company’s systems enable a variety of wireless applications including security and surveillance, VoIP, last mile access, enterprise LAN connectivity and Point-to-Point backhaul.

“Bridging the digital divide is a global issue, and wired technology often fails in helping close the gap due to the high cost of materials and services required to reach remote areas,” said Simon Snowdon, Sales Manager for the United Kingdom at Proxim Wireless (News - Alert).

Showdon said that the company has provided the end-to-end broadband wireless networks for many rural communities throughout the world, adding that company is always encouraged to see the positive economic impact that broadband connectivity has on these areas.
