Redmond, Washington-based mobility applications vendor, Microvision (News - Alert) Inc. has reportedly landed an initial purchase order from a top European mobile phone operator for its pico projector.

 

Microvision has, however, not disclosed the name of its new client, nor did it announce the precise number of units asked by the European operator. Company officials said, however, that these projectors would be deployed in Europe within next month.

 

Known as SHOWWX, Microvision’s laser-based pico projector beams video or images from a mobile device to any surface.

 

Based on the PicoP display engine, Microvision's SHOWWX delivers a big screen viewing experience from a device about the size of a mobile phone. So analysts say the projector is made for iPod. Users of the SHOWWX can also connect to other portable media players, mobile phones and notebooks to share movies, YouTube' (News - Alert) clips and photos.

 

Microvision company officials said that SHOWWX can project images up to 200 inches across, depending on the ambient lighting conditions, without the user ever having to adjust focus.

 

Alexander Tokman, Microvision president and CEO, said that the company is pleased to welcome the first global mobile phone operator as a SHOWWX launch customer for 2009.

 

 “We believe that interest from one of the three largest carriers in the world in this application and specifically in Microvision's PicoP laser projection technology is an important first step towards future accessory and embedded opportunities,” Tokman said.

Last month, Japan's Uniden Corporation placed an initial purchasing order for Microvision’s plug-n-play projector. Microvision took weeks to disclose the name of this purchaser.
