Nuance Communications to Set Up an Open Voice Services European Center of Excellence

Nuance Communications, Inc. – a Burlington, Mass.-based provider of speech solutions -- has announced its plans to open an “Open Voice Services European Center of Excellence” to fulfill the needs of global mobile operators.


 
The proposed center will be a seat of innovation for global research and development with technical teams focused on all aspects of Nuance (News - Alert) – from its voicemail-to-text and voice control solutions to its mobile messaging and connected-car voice services.  
 
According to the company, there is a growing demand for Nuance’s rapidly emerging suite of services that target free-form, unstructured speech input, which has given rise to an opportunity for research in the area of speech recognition.
 
Open voice services are also in great demand by mobile operators. Nuance said it hopes to create an environment where research in such areas can thrive.
 
“Nuance’s commitment to innovation and the wealth of speech technology talent throughout the region inspires Nuance to invest in launching a formal Center of European Excellence, focused on open voice services,” said Vlad Sejnoha, the company’s chief speech scientist. “In addition to our current internal efforts and additional innovation investments recently announced with IBM (News - Alert), we expect this new center of excellence to ensure Nuance’s voice services team achieves a level of innovation second to none in the industry.”

Earlier this year, TMCnet reported that Nuance Communications entered into an agreement with MetroPCS Communications, Inc. to launch a powerful on-device self-service solution that lets customers manage their mobile account directly on the handset, wherever and whenever, by simply dialing 611.
