T-Mobile Austria Upgrades Network Using Nokia Siemens Networks' Flexi Base Station

T-Mobile Austria has reportedly signed an agreement with Nokia Siemens Networks to modernize its third generation radio access network by mid-2010. The new network, supported by NSN’s Flexi Multiradio Base Station will help T-Mobile (News - Alert) Austria reduce energy consumption by almost half.

“What better way to upgrade than with a commitment to preserve our future,” said Christian Laqué, executive vice president for Networks at T-Mobile Austria (News - Alert), in a statement.

NSN’s Base Station prepares the network for Next Generation of Mobile Networks and delivers a completely new end user experience, while reducing our overall energy consumption – creating a win-win situation for everyone, Laqué said.

The NGMN network will provide end-users with rich mobile broadband features. Users will experience an instant improvement in the speed of browsing, email, video sharing, music downloads and many more applications, officials said.

As part of this project, NSN will install 2,500 Flexi Multiradio Base Station nationwide. T-Mobile Austria estimates that it will reduce the carbon footprint by as much as 2,500 tons per year, or the amount comparable to CO2 emissions from up to 250 households.

The modular compact design of the Flexi Base Station minimizes carbon emissions generated during transportation and installation. The Flexi Base Station is also designed to work without the need for external air conditioning – bringing a 30 percent reduction in site energy consumption.

The award-winning Flexi Base Station is easy to deploy; it works for 3G; it is also Long Term Evolution ready and can be upgraded via remote software downloads. As a result, it helps keep operating expenditure in check.

“Our energy efficient Flexi Multi-radio Base Station is a complete solution offering for operators across markets ensuring excellent end user experience with top service quality and network performance,” said Manfred Kilga of Nokia Siemens Networks (News - Alert), in a statement.

The upgrade process is being carried out on a live network, so T-Mobile also needs to ensure that the subscriber services continue uninterrupted and the quality of experience remains high.

NSN is also providing T-Mobile with the NetAct network management system to monitor, manage and optimize the network to ensure high-quality services.
NSN recently introduced SiteStar, a cooling cabinet ideal to be used with Flexi Base Station that does not use air conditioners for cooling, TMCnet reported. Officials say that SiteStar can increase battery life of these network components by three times.
