World's First LTE Call on Commercial Software

Nokia Siemens (News - Alert) Networks has announced the successful demonstration of LTE data calls using standards-compliant software and a commercial base station.

Standard compliant LTE (News - Alert) network products and terminals are a precondition for commercial network rollouts and for end users to benefit from a large terminal variety from different vendors. This is therefore an indication that we are getting closer to commercial deployments.

The data call was conducted in Nokia (News - Alert) Siemens’ R&D Center in Ulm, Germany, using the company’s Flexi Multiradio Base Station, which has been shipped to over 80 operators around the world.

Marc Rouanne, head of the Radio Access business unit said, “This call is a significant landmark in building and strengthening our entire LTE ecosystem. We see customers adopting LTE along differing timelines and we stand ready to meet the needs of early adopters of LTE as well as operators with extended migration paths from 3G/HSPA+ to LTE.”

The first deployments for LTE services are foreseen for the end of 2009, with volume rollouts of commercial networks in early 2010.

Nokia Siemens Networks has also announced an upgrade to Belgacom’s (News - Alert) International Carrier Services backbone network throughout Europe. The optical network transmission capacity will be raised from 10 Gbps to 40Gbps; the target date for completion is December 2009.

Patrick George of Belgacom said, “Our customers are witnessing an increased demand for high-speed Internet access due to the increasing use of bandwidth-hungry applications. The 40 Gig network upgrade will help us deliver better services to our existing customers as well as provide enhanced capacity to serve new customers at the most competitive price levels.”
