Norwegian telecommunications service provider Altibox has reportedly deployed Harmonic’s solution in a bid to offer world class viewing experience to football fans across its network. Altibox has chosen StreamLiner video servers, Armada intelligent asset management, and ProStream 8000 digital mosaic solution from Harmonic (News - Alert).

Harmonic’s solutions will help Altibox to provide advanced IPTV (News - Alert) video-on-demand services and multi-channel mosaic viewing for subscribers across Norway and Denmark.

Initially this advanced IPTV offering will be available only for Norwegian Elite Series football programming, and will later be offered to additional sporting events.

Altibox uses StreamLiner video servers and the Armada asset management system for live content ingest and recording. These solutions also help in instantaneous provisioning of up to ten simultaneous matches to more than 200,000 set-top boxes in the Altibox network.

Harmonic’s solution lets subscribers watch a live football match. They also have the option of switching to on demand viewing of important events in other matches using Altibox’s intuitive Electronic Program Guide.

The multi-channel mosaics generated by the ProStream 8000 digital video mosaic solution allows subscriber to watch up to eight simultaneous football matches on a mosaic grid or in full-screen mode. According to Harmonic’s this solution also helps subscribers interactively link to the VOD content to follow highlights from all matches.

Altibox can now combine VOD and standard broadcast TV experiences to bring a new level of interactivity to their IPTV service, according to Tore Kristoffersen, chief technology officer at Altibox. This also gives them a competitive advantage in the market, he said.

“Harmonic continues to deliver technologies that enable leading-edge operators like Altibox to successfully deploy innovative and advanced on-demand services,” said Ian Graham, vice president of Europe and Middle East Sales at Harmonic Inc., in a statement. “Our powerful and highly scalable software-based solutions provide operators with a unified system easily tailored to provide value-added services such as time-shifted TV, VOD and interactive video mosaics to enhance the TV viewing experience.”

Harmonic has also announced that it will provide a new transcoding technology on the company’s ProStream 1000 Stream Processing platform.

The company said this technology will extend the functionality of ProStream 1000 sets, and provide density for MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 AVC and MPEG-4 to MPEG-2 transcoding.
