LocatioNet Systems (News - Alert) has formed a partnership with Portugese Mobile operator Optimus to launch amAze, the off-board GPS navigation service in Portugal. The service will be offered as free ad-funded for Optimus’ customers along with local partner Digital Minds.

Optimus provides clients with high-quality services and mobile phones. LocatioNet claims that it redefines the navigation and local search market and the amAze service is based on LocatioNet’s Patented LBS middleware, best-of-its-kind GIS engine and advanced client-server technology.

LocatioNet claims that amAze happens to be first free mapping, navigation and local search application for mobile phones. It is designed for the regular mass-market java enables mobile phones and it is also compatible with Windows mobile phones. The company has stated that the support for Android (News - Alert) and iPhone platforms will soon be added and the service was very successfully launched by several mobile operators around the world.

Based on the internal GPS receiver in the handset, consumers would be able to use the application to get turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation in many countries and Portuguese handsets owners can get access to the most economical navigation service currently available in the market through the ad-funded model supported by the application.

Nuno Lopes Gama, head of mobile internet and data services at Optimus has stated that they are pleased to be a part of this joint venture and they believe that amAze is the ideal solution for their customers under the right business model. This is the kind of service with a perfect fit with some form of ad-funded, ad-sponsored or ‘freemium’ model and the company expects these factors to drive adoption, creating value for customers, advertisers and Optimus.

Ofer Tziperman, President of LocatioNet has also expressed excitement over launching amAze with Optimus and has stated that amAze has proven to be a daily useful application for customers and a great platform for advertisers who wish to reach out to them. The unique ad-funded business model opens up some new exciting opportunities across the value chain.

These are some benefits that Optimus’s customers will get to enjoy using the amAze app: search and location by address; search and navigate to businesses located in the Yellow pages, indicate any required location on the map, calculate the fastest route between two locations, save and manage personal favorites list; and the app covers Central and Western Europe and North America without the need to any externally purchased maps.

amAze is a unique platform for advertisers. It offers good exposure to advertising campaigns with an unmatched number of options for users to act upon the advertising messages. The service can also present ads based on the user’s current location, which adds an important relevancy factor and a higher click-through rate.

LocatioNet had partnered with DigitalGlobe (News - Alert) to bring global satellite imagery to the amAze mobile service and Huawei had selected 'amAze' as the navigation app.
