TMCnet Contributor
Nortel’s GSM-R technology will now provide wireless communications to the 207 km Czech section of the international railway corridor IV between Austria and Poland. Nortel (News - Alert) has announced that Kapsch CarrierCom, a partner of the company, will supply and deploy the network.
Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway or GSM-R, is an international wireless communications standard for railway communication and applications. Based on GSM and EIRENE - MORANE specifications, this technology is used for communication between train and railway regulation control centers.
According to the agreement, the new GSM-R network extension will be installed on the corridor line connecting Austria to Poland from Breclav to Prerov in the Czech Republic to Petrovice u Karviné on the Polish border. With Nortel's GSM-R solution, Czech Railways can improve safety, reduce operational costs and increase average train speeds, claims Nortel. The technology will also help in enhancing network interoperability and supporting new voice applications running over the GSM-R network.
“Railway technology is developing at a fast pace. Higher train speeds and more demanding security regulations make it necessary to implement reliable and trusted new communication systems across railway networks," adds Cyrill Busslinger, country manager Austria, Nortel. “Nortel´s proven GSM-R technology and Kapsch CarrierCom's (News - Alert) longstanding expertise in implementing GSM-R networks, provide a strong foundation for the modernization of the Czech Railway network.”
Along with Nortel's Base Station Controller 3000 and Nortel Trans Coding Unit 3000, the solution for the Czech Railways corridor IV includes Nortel Base Transceiver Station 9000 and 6000 products. The new contract includes an extension to the Czech Railway's switching subsystem and an upgrade to Nortel's intelligent network and GPRS packet core solution.
The company recently introduced global sales for its voice services and Unified Communications (News - Alert) (UC) solution, the Communication Server 1000 Release 6.0, that simplifies installation and user interaction, is fail-safe rugged and has advanced security levels. It is also designed mainly based on customer feed-back. The CS 1000 R6.0 provides much better simplicity, resiliency, security, and openness, states the company.
