Linkem Spa, a wireless broadband service provider and nationwide WiMAX (News - Alert) license holder in Italy, will deploy WiMAX across Italy using Alvarion’s 4Motion solution for the 3.5 GHz frequency band.

Under the agreement, Alvarion (News - Alert) will provide BreezeMAX base stations, customer premises equipment, and WiMAX embedded PC cards for the project, which has already begun. Alvarion is also providing voice and data services to SOHO, businesses and vertical markets.

Linkem holds WiMAX licenses in thirteen regions across Italy and intends to deploy Mobile WiMAX networks in both rural and urban settings. By 2013, the completed network will connect all thirteen regions to high-speed broadband access and services.

Explaining the reason for choosing Alvarion’s end-to-end Mobile WiMAX solution, Davide Rota, CEO of Linkem said that they intend to offer the best WiMAX service to their customers. He is confident that Alvarion’s solution will enable them to meet their goal of providing advanced broadband services at competitive rates and unmatched quality to their subscribers.

Tzvika Friedman, president and CEO of Alvarion, believes that Linkem is well positioned to be one of the leading WiMAX operators in Italy due to its successful track record as an innovative wireless service provider and the acquisition of thirteen regional WiMAX licenses.

Friedman also expressed his company’s commitment to Linkem with the deployment of its Mobile WiMAX network.

Alvarion’s officials explain that their 4Motion provides Linkem with a better business case as the solution offers better coverage and capacity, making it easier to introduce a wide range of revenue-generating services.

Last week, Alvarion won a $6 million contract by Costa Rica’s ICE, or the “Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad.” Alvarion will provide ICE with its 4Motion solution with a WiMAX Forum (News - Alert) Certified BreezeMAX 2500 platform for advanced broadband services.

Mobile WiMAX technology is widely used for providing anytime anywhere broadband connectivity experience through the use of multiple form factor devices. WiMAX use broad channels to offer high data rate services over large distances, which turns whole cities into large broadband hotspots.
