Boingo Wireless Expands to Major German Airports
By Oliver VanDervoort

If you have heard of the company Boingo (News - Alert) Wireless, then you have probably done a little air travel. While the air is where the company has been spending most of its resources, Boingo is also well known for providing free and “for-a-fee” wireless Internet connectivity for retail businesses the world over. The company just announced that it has strengthened its standing in the airline and airport wireless networks by expanding to Germany.

The company has won contracts to own and operate Boingo Wi-Fi networks at three of the most popular airports in Germany. Launching later this year, Boingo will be able to boast that they are the only international Wi-Fi provider that is operating inside of Germany. Combined, the 30 million travelers go through the three airports that Boingo Wireless (News - Alert) will be present in.

Knut Deimer, head of IT at Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, talked about what Boingo could bring with this new agreement. “The launch of Boingo’s Wi-Fi services will provide our travelers with a familiar option for global Wi-Fi access. Boingo’s success in leveraging their neutral host roaming platform to maximize accessibility will help our passengers stay productive while in transit.”

As with most of its airport Wi-Fi networks, these German networks will be accessible using either a “day pass” or through a monthly fee should the user find themselves using the network repeatedly. Boingo will also be offering up hourly payment plans to potential users. These three German airports are going to be added to a stable of International airports in the United States and Europe. At these airports, Boingo is also able to offer up plans that work interchangeably with one another. This means that a monthly subscriber does not have to set up a new plan when they fly from Heathrow in London to the John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City.
