ScratchDuino is the first OpenSource Robotics Kit for education in Finland

(Cision Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) With a support of MOCT project led by Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy, Russian educational platform ScratchDuino plans to enter Finnish market with their open source robot-designing kit.

Representatives of ScratchDuino team recently finished their business tour of 4 Finland regions (Helsinki, Kotka, Tampere, and Lahti) where they had several days of individual consultations and meetings with Finnish experts and partners. They also took part in “Subcontract 2014” expo in Tampere.

ScratchDuino is one of the 10 finalists of the first Russian-Finnish business contest – Finlanding. The aim of the contest is to assist Russian hi-tech companies in finding support for creating their European platform as well as in acquiring partners and customers in Finland and the European Union.  Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy is a primary sponsor of the Finlanding competition within the MOCT project.

During the business tour company representatives had series of meetings with prospective manufacturers and visited production lines of printed circuit board. Special meeting was arranged with community of former Nokia engineers and open source community members. ScratchDuino team also visited Aalto University, Tampere University of Applied Sciences and Tampere University of Technology that were impressed with the project and chose to try ScratchDuino robot kits in their robotics projects.

– Under the name ScratchDuino we produce simple and easy to use robots and laboratories for children to explore Physics and Robotics. We have already received orders from Finland. Right now we are gathering funding to start our operations here. Finland is attractive to us because it is a neighbor country and a gateway to Europe. We are also interested in collaboration with former-Nokia engineers, says Pavel Frolov, the project’s producer.

About the ScratchDuino Robots Construction Kit ScratchDuino is a highly customizable, simple and interactive open source robots construction kit with magnetic-mount sensors. The basic kit includes 2 light sensors, 2 contact sensors, 2 reflective object sensors, and one “infrared eye” sensor. Each sensor is protected by an individual plastic shield and could be mounted onto the motorized platform in a foolproof way. It is ready out of the box, which allows to easily assemble a working robot in 5 minutes.

Furthermore, two blank magnetic-mount modules come with the kit, for inventors to build their own custom sensors, that will collect data and process it according to a piece of code such advanced users will be able to program with Scratch or Arduino IDE. Unique features of ScratchDuino are simplicity of assembly by using magnetic-mount parts, and simplicity of programming the AI by Scratch, a visual program language.

ScratchDuino is built utilizing Arduino technology, which is an open source electronic prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It can be used as an interactive educational open source platform for kids and beginners, as well as a vast experimental kit for advanced robots enthusiasts.

Being completely open source, the ScratchDuino robots construction kit allows users to assemble robots utilizing the original set of parts, to modify their robots in a various ways, to program AI, and to share their modifications with STEM robotics community all over world.
