Japan found to have slowest LTE mobile wireless networks in survey(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) LONDON, Feb. 15 -- (Kyodo) _ Japan offers the slowest high-speed LTE wireless service for mobile phones among nine markets with advanced telecommunications networks, according to a study of average actual download speeds conducted by OpenSignal Inc. Sweden ranked top in average bandwidth speed with 22.1 megabits per second on the so-called 4G network, while Japan was at the bottom with 7.1 Mbps, according to a report posted Tuesday on its Website for building a database of cellular coverage worldwide. Between them were Hong Kong (with 19.6 Mbps), Denmark (19.1 Mbps), Canada (18.1 Mbps), Australia (17.3 Mbps), South Korea (16.4 Mbps), Germany (14 Mbps) and the United States (9.6 Mbps). "The countries where we record the fastest average speeds tend to be ones where the population is heavily concentrated in a small number of urban centers," said OpenSignal. In Japan, among the three major telecom companies, Softbank Corp. delivered the fastest 16.2 Mbps on its long-term evolution network, followed by KDDI Corp.'s 14.8 Mbps. NTT Docomo Inc., the largest mobile phone operator that set up one of the world's first commercial LTE networks, logged 5.5 Mbps.
