CEA Names Four Technology & Standards Award Winners


ARLINGTON, Va. --(Business Wire)--

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® today announced the recipients of the CEA Technology Leadership Awards and the CEA Technology Achievement Award, designed to recognize individual accomplishments in the industry's leading technology and standards programs.

"Now in their fifth year, the CEA's Technology and Standards Awards honor individuals who are driving innovation in the consumer electronics industry," said Brian Markwalter, senior vice president of research and standards,CEA. "These leaders have made major strides in the industry's ongoing efforts to develop essential standards to enable interoperability, reduce energy use and bring to market new devices and services."

The CEA Technology Leadership Award, presented for commitment to excellence as evidenced by the extent and consistency of an individual's participation in the Technology & Standards program, honored the following three industry leaders:

  • Arthur Allison III, senior director of advanced engineering at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB). Allison currently serves as vice chairman of one of the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC)'s technology groups, leading the system architecture team and participating in multiple specialist groups. In addition, Allison participates in the standards development activities of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers and CEA. He is co-chair of CEA's Automatic Format Description & Bar Data Working Group, which was awarded an Emmy for its efforts to ensure video programs using different aspect ratios are optimally displayed on consumer devices. Prior to NAB, Allison's experience included systems designs for home automation and TV rating system design and deployment.
  • Michael Dolan, founder and president of Television Broadcast Technology. For several years Dolan has been involved in digital television engineering, including data broadcast system architecture, digital receiver design and compliance. Dolan has worked for and founded various computer graphics and real-time systems companies. This includes early foundational work in World Wide Web Consortium technology and analog data broadcasting. He currently chairs the ATSC Data Broadcasting Specialist Goup and co-chairs CEA's Digital Closed Captioning and Internet Captions working groups.
  • Jon Fairhurst, manager of Consumer Electronics standards at Sharp (News - Alert) Laboratories of America. Fairhurst is an active member of American National Standards Institute, ATSC, CEA, International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC (News - Alert)), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. Today, Fairhurst is the Technical Advisor for the US Technical Advisory Group for IEC TC100, administered by CEA. He also chairs CEA's Television Manufacturers Caucus and various other working groups in CEA and IEC where he has led efforts to create standards for accurate measurement of TV power consumption.



The 2012 CEA Technology Achievement Award, which focuses on an individual's contributions to new technologies or significant improvements made to existing technologies and participation and leadership in CEA's Technology & Standards program, was awarded to John Roman, director of broadband and regulatory policy for Intel (News - Alert). Roman has over 25 years of experience with various spectrum, broadband, and regulatory policy matters. Roman has chaired several industry technology working groups, including the Wi-Fi Alliance (News - Alert) RF Health and Science Task Group and the CEA Wireless Power Safety & Emissions Working Group.
