The Hypersonic Technology Vehicle-2, launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., atop a rocket and released on Aug. 11, 2011, was part of research aimed at developing super-fast global strike capability for the Department of Defense.
Delay in Internet name expansion continuesNEW YORK (AP) _ There's still no word on when applications will continue for new Internet address suffixes to join ".com" and others in use. Last week, a technical glitch forced the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which is in charge of domain names, to abruptly shut down a system for letting companies and organizations apply for new names.
German rules against YouTube in rights caseBERLIN (AP) _ A German court has ruled that online video platform YouTube must install filters to prevent users from uploading some music videos whose rights are held by a music-royalties collecting body. German news agency dapd reported that the Hamburg state court on Friday mostly sided with Germany's GEMA, which represents about 60,000 German writers and musicians.
Microsoft's Windows propels pleasant 3Q surpriseSAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Microsoft produced a surprisingly strong quarter to start the year, pleasing investors looking forward to even bigger things from the software maker's much-anticipated overhaul of Windows operating system next fall. The performance announced Thursday defied the conventional thinking that Microsoft would have trouble selling more Windows licenses as more people snapped up tablet computers, such as Apple Inc.'s trendsetting iPad, while other prospective personal computer buyers delayed making their purchases until the next version of Microsoft's operating system hits the market.

Venture capital investments fall 19 percent in 1QNEW YORK (AP) _ Funding for startups fell 19 percent in the first three months of the year, as cautious venture capitalists funneled less money into fewer deals. According to a study out Friday, startup investments fell to $5.8 billion in the January-March quarter from $7.1 billion in the same period in 2011. The companies receiving deals were mainly in the Internet, energy and medical device sectors in the later stages of development. There were 758 deals completed during the quarter, 15 percent fewer than the 889 a year earlier.
Md. becomes first to OK password protection billANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) _ Maryland is poised to become the first state to ban employers from demanding applicants or workers hand over their log-in information for social media sites like Facebook. The measure, which handily passed the legislature earlier this month, keeps managers from snooping on password-protected content, a practice advocates of the bill say violates privacy and intimidates job seekers and employees.

Hackers target F1 websites over Bahrain GPLONDON (AP) _ A hackers group has claimed responsibility for a denial-of-service attack on the official Formula One website in protest over the running of this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix. The hacking collective Anonymous also attacked F1-racers.net, where it posted a message saying the "Formula 1 racing authority was well-aware of the Human Rights situation in Bahrain and still chose to contribute to the regime's oppression of civilians and will be punished."
IPhone bills boost Verizon 1Q revenue growthNEW YORK (AP) _ Holiday sales of the iPhone 4S started to boost revenue at Verizon Communications Inc. in the latest quarter, as subscribers settled in to paying their new monthly bills. That meant that wireless service revenues grew at their fastest pace in three years at Verizon Wireless. The country's largest cellphone company started selling the iPhone 4 a bit more than a year ago, but sales got a big boost when the 4S model was released in October.
